Shree Bose’s company to teach computer science and robotics through learning kits
EdTech startup Piper Learning Inc., founded by Indian-American Shree Bose, is all set to start sales of Made-in-India products via Amazon and Flipkart in 2022. The California-based company, in association with Brand Capital and the Times Group of India, plans to bring easy-to-learn engineering and computer science concepts to students.
“We want the magic of Piper—building with technology physically while experiencing virtual, storytelling-based lessons—to be accessible to everyone,” said Shree. “With the COVID-19 pandemic, as students have been in lockdown for months, learning has largely moved online. So we wanted to create an experience that allows students to use their computers in a different way than simply for their online classes, which is exactly what Piper Make allows anyone to do.”
Piper was founded by Bose in 2014 while she was a Harvard University student. With an aim to help students around the world struggling to gain a foothold in exploring technology, Piper creates electrical engineering and computer science kits for children aged more than 8 years. Bose won the Grand Prize at the inaugural Google Global Science in 2011 and held conversations with students across the world regarding her journey as a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) student.
The Piper Computer Kit, the company’s flagship product, blends physical building with electronics and gameplay in the virtual world, using the Raspberry Pi Edition of Minecraft. The award-winning STEM company launched Piper Make, their online coding platform, in March 2021. Piper Make allows students to convert their personal computer into a powerful prototyping station using simple hardware and electronics paired with free, drag-and-drop coding lessons in kits designed for everyone, from amateur to advanced users. With representations of the Raspberry Pi Pico, the bite-sized microcontroller that powers the lessons, translations of Google Blockly code to Circuit Python, and more, Piper Make is designed to empower anyone to learn the basics of hardware and coding.
With a high demand for robotics across the world, Piper launched its Piper Make Robotics Expedition Kit, an add-on to their Piper Make platform, during the holiday season. With servo motors and custom laser-cut wood pieces that can be assembled using an engineering Blueprint, the Kit enables users to get started with story-based online lessons. This new Robotics Expedition Kit gives kids hands-on experience building the robots they see in the world around us.
As a company largely focused in the United States, Piper has quickly grown into a global brand with products in over 50,000 homes in every continent.
Talking about her journey, Bose, who belongs to Kolkata, said that her grandfather’s cancer diagnosis and struggle sparked her exploration. “I’m excited to bring the opportunities I have been lucky to have to the next generation of Indian innovators. I’m confident that with a solid foundation in technology, confidence around building with hardware, and the innovative spirit of getting started with Piper, India will be a source of solutions to the world’s big challenges. I’m excited for Piper to be a part of it.”
