So are you yearning to bridge the tech gap? Are you harbouring a wish to pursue a Computer Science degree? Let’s answer these questions here.
Prerequisites for a Master’s in Computer Science
With the big data boom, the need for analytical skills is at an all time high. This is where a degree in Computer Science helps one develop problem-solving, critical thinking and complex analytical skills, which are especially useful for specialists working with complex algorithms and big data. However, if you think a Master’s degree in Computer Science would require a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. This might be a prominent case in India where a Master’s is considered a continuation degree of Bachelor’s. Most of the Indian Universities require students to prove their proficiency in five core concepts including Theoretical Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computing Systems and Data Structures and Algorithms. Acquiring this knowledge can be done through the many MOOCs or through certifications, also called nano degrees, through learning portals but most Indian Universities do not accept it as eligible for entry.
But many universities abroad will accept your eligibility for a Master’s in Computer Science based on your aptitude and not your undergraduate degree. They plan to bridge the technical divide by offering bridge courses as a run-up to the main course. You might also be asked for graduate admission tests like GRE or GMAT to prove your technical aptitude. Another requirement is proficiency in the English language. For candidates from the Indian subcontinent, this proficiency comes relatively easily. In cases otherwise, proficiency in the language has to be proved through certification programs like IELTS or TOEFL.
The Masters in Computer Science program offered by the University of London is one such offering. Such courses are offered by Universities in the US, UK, Canada and Germany. Similarly if you are not in a position to go abroad to study, online learning portals offer courses from global universities like Stanford, Caltech and the like. Liverpool John Moores University offers Masters programs for candidates with no prior coding experience. While it goes without saying these courses are a tremendous boost to any IT professional’s career, at a certain level, computer science is a field of knowledge that augments your core occupation or business, be it in finance, HR or core industrial domain.
How good is Online Learning?
The growth in the online learning market is a good indicator of the success and uptake of online courses. According to a research done by KPMG in association with Google, the market for reskilling and online certifications saw a CAGR of 38% in India alone. Another statistic that cements online learning as a dominant future is the fact that the e-learning market size grew at nearly 15% in the year 2021. By 2026, this market is projected to reach a whopping $374.3 Bn.
When considered in conjunction with the pandemic induced job losses and the Great Resignation, developing proficiencies while working is a sure shot way to prevent loss in earnings. Instead, leveraging the flexibility of the courses, you should equip yourself with the relevant proficiencies and skills to strengthen the foundation for a Master’s Degree in Computer Science.
If you are deeply interested in taking up a Master’s program in Computer Science but do not have a foundational degree in Computer Science, you need not hold back anymore! You can test the waters of the tech world, if you can prove you have the required technical and mathematical aptitude to pursue an in depth degree in the subject.
